Burton on Trent is the home of British brewing and is a busy, thriving area in the centre of the country. In March 2001 the local authority, East Staffs Borough Council (ESBC) transferred all of its housing stock to Trent & Dove Housing Limited.
Trent & Dove is a non-profit, housing provider providing affordable rented housing, as well as advice and services to homeless and vulnerable people.

Having worked with ESBC for ten years, Taalus was asked in 2002 to help plan Trent & Dove’s move to new headquarters, and to design and develop new networking and communications systems which would facilitate delivery of improved housing services.

Following a competitive tender process to ensure value for money, Trent & dove chose to implant the acclaimed Avaya IP Office phone system proposed by Taalus.
"Taalus helped us to develop our own rough ideas into well defined plans for a total solution, and then to bring these plans to fruition. We knew VoIP was the up-and-coming technology and we wanted a phone system that was futureproof. Taalus quoted a competitive price and we were confident in its ability to deliver, based on our previous experience with the company."
- John Imber, Information Systems Manager, Trent & Dove
Taalus designed a new network infrastructure for Trent & Dove based on Category 5E cabling – a managed 3Com 10/100 solution, with Gigabit connectivity for servers and a Gigabit backbone.
Key features of the specified Avaya IP Office 406 telephone system include:
CTI interface – for an interactive caller experience, with deployment even to basic analogue handsets
Operator consoles – flexibility for use of traditional ‘BLF’ operator units
Sophisticated call management functions - provided by separate Proteus application
Localised management – allows Trent & Dove to carry out ‘moves and changes’ saving time and cost
Call processing – extensive use of direct dialling (DDI) and voicemail takes pressure off reception staff
Reduced call costs to mobile phones – IP Office routes calls to mobile staff via ‘Premicell’ devices, with significant savings.
Disaster recovery – Taalus enabled Trent & Dove to deploy an emergency solution to a temporary office in the event of a disaster
John Imber is delighted with the capabilities of the new telephone system:
"We have been asked for many applications since its implementation, and have always been able to say “Yes!” Through consultation with Taalus we developed an effective, reliable and resilient telephony and data network with the capacity for future growth.
Taalus continues to provide full support and development
services onour voice network, WAN and LAN systems."
